Léopold Verguet's Sketchbook
One of the masterpieces of the general archives of the Society of Mary in the General House in Rome is the sketchbook of Fr Léopold Verguet (1817-1914). He was a great artist, and part of the first Marist mission to Oceania. His missionary career was short, but extraordinarily eventful, and he visited many of the islands. On the occasion of the centenary of Verguet’s death, Frs Alois Greiler sm and Mervyn Duffy sm have published a book with his story accompanied by his illustrations. The volume, in coffee-table format, is dominated by the extraordinary images made by Verguet of first contact with the culture on the islands, and contains also extracts from letters from Verguet and his confreres. The book is colorful and captivating, showing the beauty and drama of the beginnings of the Church in Oceania.
The book is published by Adelaide, ATF (Australia).
