Blessing of Marist Centre in Ranong

On 27 June the recently opened Marist Centre of Ranong, Thailand, was blessed by Bishop Joseph Pratan. Also present were two bishops from Myanmar, representatives from the Mission Centre of the Australian province, some Thai and Burmese priests, friends from Singapore, Marist Brothers from Bangkok and also Fr Jim McElroy (Ireland) who was visiting the mission in Thailand with some students from St Mary’s college in Dundalk. The centre is the basis for the work of the Marists among the Burmese migrants in the areas of education, health (HIV-AIDS) and migrant support services. In the two-story building there are classrooms for pre-school children up to secondary level students, to whom all kind of courses and activities are offered. The building hosts also a community centre for migrant adults and a library of Burmese literature. With the health program poor people living with HIV/AIDS are receiving the necessary assistance: medical needs, accompaniment, care and closeness to the sick and their families.
