A mission too far... Pacific Commitment, 1835-1841
A Mission Too Far … Pacific Commitment, 1835 – 1841, is the title of a book written by Fr Jan Snijders sm (the Netherlands) and published by ATF press. Fr Jan has written a scholarly account of Fr Jean-Claude Colin’s role in founding the Marist missions in Oceania. The research was only possible because of the publication of the letters from the missionaries by Fr Charles Girard sm and the letters of Father Colin by Fr Gaston Lessard sm. The book describes how Fr Colin – who had no experience in this field - started to govern a venture on the other side of the world, and how French countrymen coped with establishing a missionary presence in New Zealand and Polynesia in the 1830s and 1840s.
